Solidago (pronounced sol-eh-DAY-go) is the genus name for the goldenrod flower, a native plant throughout much of North America. It comes from the Latin, meaning 'to make whole', referring to its tradition as an herbal remedy.
Alex Ganiaris, owner, first began landscaping on Nantucket Island with Ernst Land Design. He also worked as a field assistant for the Nature Conservancy's Prescribed Burn Program in an attempt to reestablish the native plant species on Martha's Vineyard. In 2001, Alex attended the Conway School of Landscape Design where he received a Master of Arts in Landscape Design.
Now in its third year of business, Solidago Landscaping has worked on a variety of projects in and around San Francisco, from small garden clean-ups to massive overhauling and complete re-design of spatial elements. Volunteer work includes: participation in the 2004 Flower and Garden Show, tree planting with Friends of the Urban Forest, and tree care for the Cortland Avenue Merchants Association.
We strive to provide landscape services with environmental sensitivity. Wherever possible, no chemicals are used that could harm soil, water quality, or plants and animals. Even fertilizer runoff (not just pesticides and herbicides) is a serious pollutant, one that is known to cause a myriad of problems in water bodies. We specialize in the use of indigenous plants and wise water management, incorporating state of the art irrigation techniques. These invariably provide wildlife habitat for local fauna and enhance biological diversity.
On-site recycling of materials, for example incorporating leftover bricks or concrete into a garden wall, not only saves costly disposal fees but also keeps landfills free of unnecessary debris. Excess plant material, like weeds and pruning waste, is processed off site into usable mulch and compost.
